Introduction

Vocabulary is the first and foremost important step in language acquisition. In a classroom the foreign language learning can be made interesting and efficient, interactive and interesting with the introduction of appropriate vocabulary exercises. This qualification paper is an attempt to study and explore the use of English Idioms in teaching and learning English vocabulary items in a language classroom.

Idiom is a phrase or expression whose total meaning differs from the meaning of the individual words. For example, to blow one's top (get angry) and behind the eight ball (in trouble) are English-language idioms. Idioms come from language and generally cannot be translated literally (word for word). Foreign language students must learn them just as they would learn vocabulary words. Idioms come to be a very numerous part of English. Idioms cover many drawbacks of the English language and it is one-third part of the colloquial speech. While some teaching materials may ignore idioms, or try to demote their importance, it is best for teachers to take the time to explain, discuss, and make their students use them.

This paper aims at focusing on idioms and expressions related to travelling and tourism, health and colour, and attempts to show a fresh look at the idiomatic phrases that make English the rich and intriguing language that it is. A corpora from both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries will be selected.

The theoretical instruments of analysis will lead us in the investigation of the linguistic and lexical pattern of idioms and idiomatic phrases and will help us identify the way these words and expressions are reflected in idiomatic language. Having these goals as a background the paper is focused on developing a practical direction which will include a list of idioms meant to be an useful tool for students and teachers of English, both at university level and for English as a second language as well as for anyone interested in the more colourful side of the English language.

Realization of the goal provides the solution of the following tasks:
