4.1. Activities aimed at creating optimal conditions for the mental activity of a person in the workplace.
More than half the world’s population are currently in work and 15% of working-age adults live with a mental disorder1. Without effective support, mental disorders and other mental health conditions can affect a person’s confidence and identity at work, capacity to work productively, absences and the ease with which to retain or gain work. Twelve billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety alone. Furthermore, people living with severe mental health conditions are largely excluded from work despite this being important for recovery. Mental health conditions can also impact families, carers, colleagues, communities, and society at large. Depression and anxiety cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year predominantly from reduced productivity.
Everyone has the right to work and all workers have the right to a safe and healthy working environment. Work can be a protective factor for mental health, but it can also contribute to worsening mental health. Work-related mental health conditions are preventable. Much can also be done to protect and promote mental health at work and support people with mental health conditions to participate fully and equitably in work.
WHO has developed Guidelines on mental health at work. This is accompanied by the Mental health at work: Policy brief developed in collaboration with the International Labour Organization. Together, these products aim to improve the implementation of evidence-based recommendations for mental health at work to promote mental health, prevent mental health conditions, and enable people living with mental health conditions to participate and thrive in work.
Creating optimal conditions for mental activity in the workplace is crucial for enhancing productivity, well-being, and overall job satisfaction. Here are some activities that can help achieve this goal:
Ergonomic Workspace Design: Designing workspaces that promote comfort, efficiency, and reduce physical strain can positively impact mental activity. This includes adjustable desks, ergonomic chairs, proper lighting, and minimizing noise distractions.
Encouraging Regular Breaks: Regular breaks throughout the workday can help prevent mental fatigue and maintain focus. Encourage employees to take short breaks, stretch, and engage in relaxation techniques or physical activity to recharge their minds.
Providing Mental Health Support: Create a supportive environment by offering access to mental health resources and support services. This can include employee assistance programs, counseling services, and workshops on stress management or mindfulness.
Promoting Work-Life Balance: Encourage employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance by setting clear boundaries, promoting flexible working arrangements when possible, and discouraging excessive overtime. Balancing personal and professional life helps prevent burnout and supports mental well-being.
Offering Skill Development Opportunities: Provide opportunities for employees to enhance their skills and knowledge through training programs, workshops, or seminars. Continuous learning and professional development can improve confidence and job satisfaction, stimulating mental activity.
Fostering Collaboration and Communication: Encourage open communication, teamwork, and collaboration among employees. This can be done through team-building activities, regular meetings, and creating a positive and inclusive work culture. Collaboration stimulates mental engagement and creativity.
Recognizing and Rewarding Achievement: Acknowledge and reward employees' accomplishments and contributions. Positive reinforcement and recognition for a job well done enhance motivation, satisfaction, and mental well-being.
Encouraging Autonomy and Decision-making: Provide employees with autonomy and opportunities for decision-making within their roles. Allowing individuals to have a sense of control over their work can boost intrinsic motivation and mental engagement.
Creating a Positive Physical Environment: Incorporate elements that promote a positive and inspiring atmosphere, such as plants, artwork, or natural lighting. A visually appealing and comfortable workspace can positively impact mood and mental focus.
Implementing Workload Management Strategies: Help employees manage their workloads effectively by providing clear goals and priorities, realistic deadlines, and tools for task organization. Overwhelming workloads can lead to stress and hinder mental performance.
Remember, every workplace is unique, so it's important to consider the specific needs and preferences of your employees when implementing these activities. Regular feedback and open communication can help tailor these strategies for maximum effectiveness.

Encouraging Physical Activity: Physical exercise has numerous benefits for mental well-being and cognitive function. Encourage employees to engage in physical activity by providing access to on-site gyms, organizing fitness challenges, or promoting active commuting options like cycling or walking.

Providing Healthy Snacks and Hydration: Proper nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining mental clarity and focus. Offer healthy snacks and beverages in the workplace, such as fruits, nuts, and water stations, to support employees' cognitive function and overall well-being.
Implementing Mindfulness Practices: Introduce mindfulness practices in the workplace, such as guided meditation sessions or mindfulness training workshops. These activities can help reduce stress, enhance focus, and promote a positive work environment.
Creating Quiet Spaces: Designate specific areas or rooms where employees can retreat for quiet and focused work. These spaces can be free from distractions, allowing individuals to concentrate on complex tasks or projects that require deep thinking.
Promoting Learning and Skill Sharing: Encourage a culture of continuous learning by facilitating knowledge sharing among employees. This can be done through lunch and learn sessions, mentorship programs, or internal knowledge-sharing platforms. Engaging in intellectual discussions and sharing expertise can stimulate mental activity.
Supporting Diverse Work Styles: Recognize and accommodate different work styles and preferences. Some individuals may thrive in a quiet and solitary environment, while others may prefer collaborative and social settings. Provide flexibility and options for employees to work in ways that suit their individual needs.
Reducing Information Overload: Help employees manage information overload by streamlining communication channels, implementing effective digital tools for organization and collaboration, and establishing clear guidelines on email and meeting etiquette. Simplifying information flow can reduce cognitive overload and improve mental focus.
Encouraging Creativity and Innovation: Dedicate time and resources to foster creativity and innovation within the workplace. This can include brainstorming sessions, innovation challenges, or creating designated areas for creative thinking. Nurturing a culture that values and rewards innovative ideas can stimulate mental activity and problem-solving skills.
Offering Flexibility and Autonomy: Grant employees a certain level of flexibility and autonomy in how they manage their work. Allowing individuals to have control over their schedules and work methods can increase motivation, engagement, and mental well-being.
Conducting Employee Surveys and Feedback Sessions: Regularly seek feedback from employees through surveys, focus groups, or one-on-one feedback sessions. This enables you to understand their needs, concerns, and ideas for creating a mentally stimulating work environment.
Remember, creating optimal conditions for mental activity in the workplace is an ongoing process that requires continuous evaluation, adjustment, and a commitment to supporting employees' well-being. By prioritizing mental health and providing an environment that fosters mental engagement, organizations can enhance productivity, creativity, and overall employee satisfaction.

Creating optimal conditions for the mental activity of individuals in the workplace is highly important for several reasons:

Enhanced Productivity: When employees are mentally engaged and working in an environment that supports their mental well-being, their productivity tends to increase. Optimal conditions for mental activity help individuals maintain focus, make informed decisions, and perform at their best.
Improved Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: A conducive work environment promotes clear thinking and enables employees to approach problem-solving and decision-making tasks with greater clarity and creativity. When mental activity is optimized, individuals are more likely to generate innovative solutions and make effective decisions.
Increased Job Satisfaction: When employees have the opportunity to engage their minds, feel challenged, and utilize their skills and knowledge, they experience greater job satisfaction. Creating optimal conditions for mental activity fosters a sense of fulfillment and purpose in the workplace, leading to higher levels of job satisfaction and employee retention.
Reduced Stress and Burnout: A supportive work environment that takes into account mental well-being helps reduce stress and prevent burnout. When employees are provided with the right conditions for mental activity, they are less likely to experience excessive stress, leading to better overall mental health and a lower risk of burnout.
Enhanced Creativity and Innovation: Optimal conditions for mental activity stimulate creativity and innovation in the workplace. When individuals are encouraged to think critically, share ideas, and collaborate, they are more likely to come up with fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to challenges.
Positive Work Culture: Prioritizing mental activity in the workplace creates a positive work culture. When employees feel that their mental well-being is valued and supported, they are more likely to feel motivated, engaged, and satisfied with their work. A positive work culture, in turn, promotes collaboration, teamwork, and employee morale.
Attraction and Retention of Talent: Creating optimal conditions for mental activity can also contribute to attracting and retaining top talent. In today's competitive job market, candidates are increasingly seeking workplaces that prioritize employee well-being and offer environments that support mental engagement and growth.
Overall Organizational Success: When employees are mentally active and motivated, their performance and contributions positively impact the overall success of the organization. By investing in the mental well-being and optimal conditions for mental activity of employees, organizations can drive innovation, achieve business goals, and maintain a competitive edge.
In summary, creating optimal conditions for mental activity in the workplace is crucial for fostering productivity, job satisfaction, innovation, and overall organizational success. It not only benefits individual employees but also contributes to a positive work culture and attracts and retains top talent. Prioritizing mental well-being is an investment that yields substantial returns for both individuals and organizations.
