Computer in my life
Computer addicts are the minority of computer users but there is no doubt that more and more young people are computer literate. Computer studies is a subject in many schools and many young people have personal computers. About one in three hundred computer owners spend almost all their time using computers.
Ninety six per cent of them are males of all ages. All of them spend an average of twenty hours per week on home computers. The majority of the adults also use computers at work. All the computer addicts are very intelligent. They have been interested in science and technology from a very early age and they are usually very shy people who like being alone.
A survey in a school showed that fewer girls are interested in computers because girls are less likely to have a computer. Even if they have one, they use then less frequently than boys. Possibly it is because we think of computers as something to do with maths and science, which are traditionally 'male' subjects. Possibly it is because most of the computer teachers are men, who give the girls less attention. Possibly parents think it is less important for girls to have computer skills.
Computer addicts are usually very shy people. Using computers gives them confidence. They love debugging and solving problems, develop programs and love learning programming languages. They learnt to communicate with other users through computer networks and the people they met in school and work think of them as experts who could help and advise when they had problems with their machines. A few spend their time 'hacking' and one addict left a message on a computer of Buckingham House. Very few computer addicts play computer games, but many people use a computer exclusively for games.
Some parents worry about computer games because they think their children won't be able to communicate with real people in the real world. But parents do not need to worry. According to research computer addicts usually do well after they have left school. Parents also do not need to worry that computer addiction will make their children become unfriendly and unable to communicate with people.
It is not the computer that makes them shy. In fact, what they know about computers improves their social lives. They become experts and others come to them for help and advice.
For most children computer games are a craze. Like any other craze, such as skate-boarding, the craze is short-lived. It provides harmless fun and a chance to escape.
If we didn't have these computer addicts, we wouldn't have modern technology. They are the inventors of tomorrow.
People who devote all their time to computers are a minority of computer users, but there is no doubt that more and more young people are well versed in computers. Computer science is a subject taught in many schools, and many young people have personal computers. About one in 300 computer owners spends most of their time working on a computer.
Ninety-six percent of them are men of all ages. They all spend an average of twenty hours a week at home computers. Most adults also use computers at work. All "computer addicts" are very smart. They are interested in science and technology from a very early age, and they are usually very shy people who enjoy spending time alone.
A survey at school showed that girls are less interested in computers because girls are less likely to have it. Even if they have a computer, they use it less often than boys. Perhaps this is because we view computers as something related to mathematics and science, and they are traditionally "male" subjects. Perhaps this is because most computer science teachers are men, who pay less attention to girls. Perhaps parents think that it is less important for girls to have computer skills.
People who are addicted to computers are usually very shy people. Computers give them confidence. They love to troubleshoot and solve problems, develop programs, and love to learn programming languages. They have learned to communicate with other users over computer networks, and people at school and at work regard them as experts who can help and give advice when they have problems with their machines. Some of them spend time hacking - for example, an avid amateur left a message on the computer at Buckingham Palace. Very few avid computer enthusiasts play games, but many people use computers exclusively for games.
Some parents worry about computer games because they think their children won't be able to communicate with real people in the real world. But the parents have no reason to worry. According to the study, avid computer enthusiasts usually do well after they leave school. Parents should also not worry that addiction to computers will make their children unfriendly and unable to communicate with people.
It's not the computer that makes them shy. In fact, what they know about computers improves their social life. They become experts and others come to them for help and advice.
For most children, playing computer games is a craze. Like any other craze like skateboarding, it doesn't last long. It provides safe fun and a chance to escape reality.
If we didn't have people who are passionate about computers, we wouldn't have modern technology. They are the inventors of tomorrow.
Computer is one of the best inventions of the 20th century. It's hard to believe that one small screen with a keyboard can change everybody's life. In the past people couldn't even imagine that:
Letters would be delivered instantly to the addressee, Music can be downloaded in a few seconds, Millions of documents can be kept on one device, The quality of photos can be easily improved, Video calls can reduce distance between friends and relatives, etc.
All this became possible with the appearance of computers. In my opinion this smart device has changed the world. My life has also significantly changed when I first started using the computer. Today I'm literally dependent on it because there are many things computer can do for me. First of all, I try to stay in touch with my friends and English pen pals. In this case I use either e-mails or social networks, such as Facebook or Vkontakte. Social networks are even more convenient. There you can see whether your companion is online or not, you can also follow your friends' news. Messages are delivered instantly, so the answer should be quick. E-mails are also good, but you don't know how soon your friend will check the box, so the answer can take some time.
Apart from Internet and its advantages, I use my computer in studying. Projects and essays are part of my home work. That's why I often use editing programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Another frequently used program for me is Skype. Since its creation distance between people has notably reduced. You can video call your friends or relatives for free and speak as much as you wish. I also like keeping photos and music on my computer. Photos can be edited by a special program called Photoshop. It is rather handy, when someone wants to improve the quality of pictures or change the size. When I have free time I read e-books or play some games on computer.
It is obvious than people can do a lot of things with the help of this multitask invention. In our technological era people can't live without computers. They are nearly addicted to this device, but there are some drawbacks as well. First of all, spending a lot of time in front of the computer results in eyesight deterioration. Secondly, people can gain excessive weight if sitting for too long without physical exercise. Thirdly, computer and particularly Internet sometimes provides too much unnecessary information, violence and hidden dangers
