Conclusion
The conclusion of Gulliver’s Travels raises enough issues to deserve being treated separately from the rest of the fourth Voyage. A section that includes chapters xi, xii, and A Letter from Capt. Gulliver to his Cousin Sympson, the conclusion is a disturbingly unsettled narrative, filtering experience through Gulliver’s increasingly exacerbated vision. From the moment he becomes attached to the Houyhnhnms, there seems to be no possibility of Gulliver’s returning to a complacent, unknowing self. Yet his attachment to his memories gives Gulliver’s character a degree of moral and psychological ambiguity that is not evident earlier in the voyages. Gulliver is unable to reconcile himself to his wife, family, friends or country, but it is impossible to say with certainty whether his misanthropy is the outcome of idealism or wounded pride. The former quality is apparent in his eloquent attack on European imperialism, the latter in the histrionic exaggeration of his claims for the moral efficacy of his travels. The division in the novelist’s mind is between his view of his art as a contrivance, like a Fabergé watch, and his view of it as a record of real life. The versatile English writer Daniel Defoe, on the evidence of such novels as his Journal of the Plague Year , a recreation of the London plague of 1665, believed that art or contrivance had the lesser claim and proceeded to present his account of events of which he had had no direct experience in the form of plain journalistic reportage. The desire to make the reader initiate certain acts social, religious, or political is the essence of all propaganda, and, though it does not always accord well with art, the propagandist purpose has often found its way into novels whose prime value is an aesthetic one. The Nicholas Nickleby of Charles Dickens attacked the abuses of schools to some purpose, as his Oliver Twist drew attention to the horrors of poorhouses and his Bleak House to the abuses of the law of chancery.
