2.2 Sludge culture and experimental setup

 

The  activated  sludge  was  taken  from  a  secondary  sedimentation  tank  at  the 

Jiangning  Municipal  WWTP  in  Nanjing,  China.  Detailed  information  about  the 

acclimatization and cultivation of the sludge is available in the SI (Test S3). 

We carried out the exposure experiment when removal of the nutrient substances 

had  stabilized  after  acclimatization  for  approximately  60  days  in  an  SBR.  Based  on

previous studies (Li et al., 2019a; Zheng et al., 2011), we chose 0.1 mg/L and 50 mg/L 

TiO

2

-NPs  exposures  concentration  (See  Test.  S4  for  details).  After  stable  cultivation 

of the SBR, we conducted the exposure experiments under the same conditions used 

for indoor acclimation for nine SBR cycles, i.e., the 72-h acute exposure test. Specific 

details  of  the  experimental  process  are  provided  in  the  SI  (Test  S4).  The  exposure 

period  light  setting  refers  to  the  illumination  used  during  the  indoor  culture  of  the 

sludge.
