Brașov is located in the historical region of Transylvania, in the heart of Romania. Being surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, the city is considered a mountain resort, with skiing and ice-skating facilities. It has a population of 255,000 inhabitants, which makes it the 7th most populated city in the country. Its nickname is The Crown City.
Overlooking Brasov there is a castle the official name of which is Bran Castle. It is sometimes referred to as Dracula’s Castle. The castle sits on a rock which is 760 meters high. Built during the Middle Ages, it was home to the infamous ruler Prince Vlad of Wallachia, also known as "Dracula," or "son of the dragon." The castle is full of hidden tunnels and secret rooms. In the 1920s it became home to Romania's royal family. In 1956, the castle was turned into a museum. Its collection contains furniture, weapons and armor dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Bran Castle is number one tourist attraction which is especially popular with international tourists.
