The results of the French election are known: Macron and Le Pen go to the second round
The second round of presidential elections in France was held by current head of state Emmanuel Macron and Marin Le Pen, leader of the National Unity Party, which represents ultra-right views.
After 97% of the ballots were billed, it turned out that Macron received 27.6 percent of the vote in the first round and his main rival, Le Pen - 27,41 percent. Now the second round will take place on April 24.
A total of 12 candidates took part in the election. The third place was occupied by Jean-Luc Melanshon, the leader of the Undiscovered France party, with 22 percent of the vote. Melanshon urged supporters not to support Le Pen. "Not a single vote should be given to Le Pen in the second round," he said in an address to supporters.
Melanshon, who was third in the first round in previous elections, asked supporters not to vote for two candidates in the second round.
Republican candidate Valerie, who is fifth in the first round (around 7 percent), Greens spokesman Yanik Jaddo, communist Faben Russel and Socialists candidate, Paris Mayor Ann Idalgo, have called on their supporters to vote for Macron in the second round.
The right-to-work politician, Eric Zemmur, who was fourth with 7.2 percent of the vote (many compared him to Donald Trump) expressed support for Le Pen in the second round.
Analysts predicted such progress in events. Pre-election polls showed that Macron remains the favorite, but he is only six percentage points behind Le Pen.
Even in previous elections in 2017, Macron and Le Pen were mutual rivals in the second round. At that time, Macron won 24 percent of the vote in the first round, and Le Pen was more than 21 percent. In the second round, Macron was supported by 66 percent of voters, while his opponent garners less than 34 percent of the vote.
Macron became the main negotiator with Vladimir Putin among the leaders of Western countries. On February 7, he arrived in Moscow and held a meeting with the President of Russia. Before and after that, he communicated with Putin many times by phone. Analysts have speculated that Macron is trying to take over as European leader after Angela Merkel leaves the German chancellorship.
Macron has called for tightening sanctions against Russia. He declared his firm position when it became known that civilians had been killed in Bucha, in the Kiev region. "There are clear signs that military crimes have been committed. Russia is responsible for the army [the killings in Bucha]," Macron said. He noted the need for Russian exports of coal and petroleum products to be restricted as part of the sanctions.
Le Pen also condemned the invasion of Ukraine but warned that sanctions would threaten Europe itself. "I have repeatedly expressed my solidarity with the Ukrainian people and said that Ukrainian refugees should be appropriately accepted," Le Pen said. At the same time, he warned that sanctions against Russia would cause gas and other resources to rise in Europe.
Marin Le Pen met with Putin during the 2017 presidential campaign. He then traveled to Moscow to meet with the Russian president. His National Front party (the party's old name) received a loan from one of the Russian banks in 2014.
