In his book “How to teach grammar” Scot Thornbury introduces 
the E-factor

A-factor
is a very simple and very practical way to 
evaluate grammar activities that we may or may not use with our 
students. The E-factor stands for 
efficiency
and the A-factor stands for 
appropriacy.
E-factor:
efficiency means to do something in the best possible 
way so with the highest quality with the least amount of time and

effort. Why is efficiency so important when it comes to grammar 
teaching. There are three key reasons: 1. The grammar is not the only 
thing that we have to teach our students and it’s not the only thing 
they have to learn all of the language systems: pronunciation, 
vocabulary, grammar and discourse; they have to learn the four 
language skills: listening, writing, speaking and reading. The second 
reason is that we have a very limited time with our students. If our 
class is 50 minutes long and we meet twice a week, that’s all we have 
to work with our students on all aspects of the English language. 
Finally, we also have limited time as teachers to prepare our lessons. 
We don’t want to be spending hours and hours to prepare for those 
250 minute classes that we might have. There are other three
