The first is children need to have opportunities to hear words multiple times in a meaningful context so they can start to solidify the link between a word and its meaning and how it is used in communication with people. An example of this would be using the word spatula in different contexts. The art center in a preschool classroom could have spatulas that the children could use with play-doh, pretending to scrape up cookies. Another area spatulas could be provided in the classroom is the dramatic play center, children could use them to pretend cook.
