ABSTRACT
This paper investigates the importance of coursebooks for teachers
of English as a Foreign
Language.
In order to do this, it evaluates the relevance of adopting a textbook as one recourse
among other teaching materials or, alternatively, as the very backbone of the teaching practices in
the classroom. A crucial concern of this study is to examine whether teachers’
beliefs and the
influence of published materials guide the language teaching process.
Data were collected
through written questionnaires of nine participant teachers.
The analysis revealed that
coursebooks represent the main language teaching material in the classroom
and that the demands
of the teachers in relation to these materials are very similar.
