Sport in the USA

Sport in the USA
The United States have been a powerhouse in world sports for a long time. Americans take great pride in their sporting accomplishments, and sports are an important part of their culture. There’s no doubt, United States rule in well-known sports such as basketball, baseball and their home grown sport of American football. See a list of the We may consider baseball as their traditional sport for it started in the 18th century, with a semi-pro National Baseball Club in the 1860’s and from that point on, baseball became the “national past time” of Americans. Nowadays, the most played sport in United States is football. Let us not forget that basketball also started in the U.S. in 1891. YMCA had a major role in spreading this sport globally. The first training ground for basketball is in YMCA and these students had disseminated across the globe. The United States also have hosted quite a number of Olympic Games from 1904 (St. Louis, Missouri) to 2002 (Salt Lake City, Utah), and will again in 2028 in LA. They have also won more than the average Olympic medals in virtually all sports.
With all these in mind, we also have to mention the long list of great athletes that the U.S. had produced starting with Mike Trout, the famous slugger of today’s baseball season. With 49 stolen bases, leading the league with a 10.9 WAR, he unanimously won the American League and still plays outstandingly from his breakout season up to now. On the other hand, football has Americans pay much attention to physical fitness and have traditionally done well in many kinds of sports. There is a large choice of sports in America. People participate in swimming, skating, squash and badminton, tennis, marathons, track-and-field, bowling, archery, skiing, etc. This can be explained by the size and variety of the country. Another reason for the popularity of sports in America is the love of Americans to competition of any kind. One more reason is that Americans use sports activities for teaching social values, such as teamwork and sportsmanship.
The top four sports in America are American in origin: football, baseball (often called 'the National Pastime'), auto-racing (especially NASCAR), and basketball. Soccer is not as popular in the US as in most other countries, but the US did host the World Cup in 1994. Soccer continues to grow in the US, and is currently one of the most played sports amongst youth. Ice hockey is also popular. The United States became the centre of the two most popular Western combat sports— boxing and wrestling. The United States has produced many champion boxers. The United States created the three popular board-based recreational sports — surfboarding, skateboarding and snowboarding. National competitions are held in all three; snowboarding is included in the Olympic Games. Triathlon, which includes swimming, bicycle-racing and long distance running, has been invented in America, too.
There are sports facilities in every school. American college sports are nearly as popular as professional sports, particularly college football and college basketball. American colleges often support sports programs, including track-and-field, water polo, football and baseball. Every high school offers its students many sports, such as wrestling, rowing, tennis and golf. There are no universities for sports in the USA, but students of any higher educational establishment are trained in different kinds of sports. Many universities are famous for their sports clubs.
Indeed, sport is a part of life of an average American.

In the USA many sports and sports activities attract millions of active participants. One reason of the popularity of sport in America may be the variety and size of America, providing Americans with a large choice of summer and winter sports. In addition, public sports facilities have always been available in great number for participants. Another reason might be that Americans like competitionby teams or as individuals, of any type. Others point out that American schools and colleges follow the tradition of all English-speaking societies in using sports activities as a way of teaching «social values».
In the USA much attention is given to organized sports. Hockey, football, baseball, basketball and volleyball are the five major sports.
Football is the most popular spectator sport. What makes football in the USA so different from its European cousins, rugby and soccer, is not just the size, speed and strength of its players. Rather, it is the most «scientific» of all outdoor team sports. Specific rules state what each player in each position may and may not do, and when. There are hundreds of possible «plays» (or moves) for teams on offence and defence. Baseball is now in second place among the sports people most like to watch. Baseball is still very popular as an informal, neighbourhood sport.
Baseball and football have the reputation of being «typically American» team sports. This is ironic because the two most popular participant sports in the world today are indeed American in origin - basketball and volleyball. Both games were invented and first played at a YMCA in Massachusetts. Basketball was invented as a game that would fill empty period between the football season and the baseball season. Today, of course, both basketball and volleyball are played everywhere by men and women of all ages. They are especially popular as school sportsProfessional and collegiate basketball games in the USA attract large numbers of fans. Most of the important games are televised live.
Sporting activities are a part of daily American life. There are many other sports and sports activities in America which attract millions of active participants. Among them are golf, swimming, tennis, marathontrack-and-field, bowling, archery, skiing, skating, squash and badminton, rowing and sailingweightlifting, boxing and wrestling. 45% of all Americans take part in some athletic activity once a day. Swimming, bicycling, fishing, joggingcallisthenics or gymnastics, and bowling are American’s favourite
