Task 2 - Sample answer:

1. The genre of the text is explanation as addressee gives information. The mode of the text is spoken as it is taken from a conversation. The conversation is one of the commonly analyzed materials of spoken discourse. The conversation could be made between a stranger and a local person, so the audience is the stranger. If the text is used for educational purposes the target audience can be students as well. The purpose of the text is to get information about swimming pools and beaches in Plymouth.

2. The register of the text is informal: no passive voice structure, spontaneous speech, incomplete and short sentence structure, tonal question sentences and shortenings etc. Signaling vocabulary: get the information off, a fun pool, vague language elements(sort of), repetition, and …

3. There a lot of conversational features of spoken discourse are used in the text. Typical and normal characteristics of spoken language that interrupt the ‘flow’ of talk. Non-fluency features such as hesitations, false starts, fillers, repetitions [though can be used for emphasis], overlaps and interruptions are natural feature of Text B. Turn taking is not always followed, sometimes S2 interrupts S1 or sometimes overlaps. The language of the text is appropriate to the style.

4. Descriptive grammar is used in the text. As we witness the standard grammar rules are not always followed in the text. Descriptive Grammar includes a set of rules about language based on how it is actually used, not how it should be used. Descriptive grammar is the approach to grammar that is concerned with describing the usage of language by native or non-native speakers without reference to proposed norms of correctness or advocacy of rules based on such norms.
