In his work, Camus addressed topics ranging from alienation to the inadequacy of traditional values.One should read this book for the experience of finding somebody almost inhumane but at the same time, a literal personification of mankind, one that prioritizes his well-being over others. It is written to confound people, make them uncomfortable but also make them think about the moral complexities and the dilemmas that we humans have come to terms with without question or debate.
You can read it simply for face-value, as a book about a man who seems disconnected from his world, and as events unfold he is lead closer and closer to the murder of a man on the beach. However, I think questions will come up that will cause the reader to delve more deeply into why. Why do the events unfold in a way that lead him to kill a man on the beach, why in this moment is he prompted to do something so extreme, and yet with such coldness? Why is he so disconnected from everyone and everything, his mother, his job, his friends, even his girlfriend? Why does he not respond to the violence he sees around him, only to then shoot a man completely unprovoked?
Camus’s novel The Stranger is an excellent example of the new existentialist literature of the 1940s. Meursault, “the strange,” is critically devoid of basic human attributes. When he kills a man, we see him forced into philosophical reflection and humanity. It is an excellent place to begin studying the peculiar shifts of mind that best characterize existentialism
