Spring 2013 Courses & Beyond
Most of the spring 2013 courses are finished; two will end in June. The semester has been as usual a great success with varied and much-enjoyed courses.
Ongoing courses will be as follows:

•The CSC Coffee House discussion group (Bill Newman) will meet Tuesday mornings during the summer at St. Bernard’s Church in Rockland.

•The Challenge of Change (Winslow Myers) ends May 29 and will resume Wednesday, September 25 at 9:30 am at the Friends Meeting House in Damariscotta.

•The Ongoing Writers' Group, led by Marilyn MUth, will continue to meet throughout the summer, on the 4th Monday of each month from 9:30-noon at the Camden Library.

In the August newsletter we’ll share the preliminary list of the classes and comments about spring courses should you have any question about the obvious value and interest of our offerings.

CSC Annual Luncheon

One hundred twenty three (the best turnout ever - by 30%!) CSC members enjoyed the Annual luncheon on May 3, 2013. Attendees included 54 CSC volunteers who received recognition for their work (Volunteers Are CSC - see below), 54 other members and 15 non-members.
Samoset Resort provided the delicious food in a lovely setting. Our guest speaker was author and journalist, Colin Woodard, who discussed his book “American Nations”. It is a fascinating study of the 11 groups of early settlers whose ideas and outlook still dominate the American political scene. The continuity derives from that fact that these people tended to agree with the ideas of those already in the area. These differences might account for some of our current governmental paralysis. Unfortunately, Mr. Woodard couldn’t provide a solution to the conundrum other than suggesting that our education system should be designed to produce more rational thinkers. The presentation provided a better understanding of the historical and cultural traits that cannot be simplified into “Red” and “Blue” states.

Why You Should Read Ulysses

(In Anticipation of Bloomsday)

Thursday, June 13, 2013

Colby College, Waterville, ME

“Ulysses is often called “unreadable,” but James Joyce scholar and MHC Board member Daniel Gunn (UMaine Farmington) will reveal how untrue that is and how pleasurable Ulysses can be. With his aid, participants will explore selections from the text, delving into Joyce’s historical, cultural, and linguistic gymnastics. And thanks to Colby's James Augustine Healy Collection of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Irish Literature, participants can also experience a first edition of James Joyce’s Ulysses, as well as other treasures from the Collection. Participation is limited for this free event, so registration is required.”
Two 30-minute tours (Healy Collection) are at 4:00 and 4:30; the reception and program will be from 5:00-6:45 pm. Both events are on the Colby College campus in Waterville.

To sign up, and for more information please use this link. Selections from the texts will be provided in advance of the event.”

(Ed. Note: Bloomsday is June 16, 2013)

Note: The following Tour of Historical Sites has been cancelled. It is hoped that the tour will be held sometime this Fall.

Don’t miss the June edition of the Maine Senior College Network Newsletter featuring “A Summer Happening” by Florence Wurzman, a student in Alice Dashiell’s spring course “The Story of You.”

Volunteer for CSC
CSC works as successfully as it does because of its volunteers. They suggest the courses; teach the courses; support the instructors and courses; organize and schedule events; arrange venues; produce and publish catalogs, advertisements, news stories, flyers, signs and brochures; distribute catalogs and other publicity; manage membership; publish the e-newsletter; do strategic planning; recruit and support volunteers; manage and govern the organization; keep our records; set, organize and manage our budget; and connect with other Senior College.
Be part of the process - contact Peter Lehman or Vic Hart to volunteer and suggest CSC events to Jack Fallow, Events Chairman.
