250. What did Johnsy take the message?
She gets depressed when she hears this message. A mite of a little woman with blood thinned by California west wind was hardly fair game for the red-fisted short- breathed old duffer. ButJohnsy he smote: and she lay, scarcely moving, on her painted iron bedstead, looking through the small Dutch windowpanes at the brick house
251. What did Johnsy do after she had cried out her grief?
After the doctor had gone Sue went into the workroom and cried a Japanese napkin to a pulp. Then she swaggered into Johnsy's room with her drawing board, whistling ragtime. Johnsy lay, scarcely making a ripple under the bedclothes, with her face toward the window. She stopped whistling, thinking she was asleep. She arranged her board and began a pen-and-ink drawing to illustrate a magazine story. Young artists must pave their way to Art by drawing pictures for magazine stories that young authors write to pave their way to Literature.
252. What did Mrs Mallard look like?
She was young, with a fair, cal face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. She was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.
253. What was Mrs Mallard thinking about?
She think that she would weep again when she saw kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead. But she saw beyond that bitter moment alng procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome. There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would have for herself. A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime as she looked upon it in that brief moment of illumination.
255. Why does the author call her joy "monstrous"?
For Mrs Mallard her husband's death was a great tragedy, and the lady becomes overjoyed to see her husband alive, and her joy ends in death.
