Gogol and Pushkin
Gogol met Pushkin in May 1831.Pushkin had a great influence on its development.From the very beginning of their acquaintance, Pushkin appreciated Gogol's talent and became the head of the aspiring writer in the field of literature.

On the advice of Pushkin, Gogol in 1835 began working on his most important works: "Dead Souls"and" The Inspector General".According to Gogol's own later confession, the plots for both works were given to him by Pushkin.In 1836, Pushkin began to publish his magazine Sovremennik and attracted Gogol as an editor.

Gogol-playwright
In the same years when Mirgorod was created,Gogol worked a lot in the field of drama.
Gogol highly valued the theater. "The theater is a great school, its purpose is deep.The theater reads a lively and useful lesson to a whole crowd,a whole thousand people at one time,"he said in his letters.
Gogol begins to write comedies, the social force of which is laughter, which castigates reality.
On October 7, 1835, he addressed Pushkin: "Please give me a story;it will be a five-act comedy, and I swear it will be funnier than hell."Pushkin gave him the plot of The Inspector General.
Revizor was written really fast:already in December of the same year, it was ready and at the beginning of 1836 it was censored.But the censors did not miss the comedy, and only thanks to Zhukovsky's petition to the tsar did it get on stage.The first performance of The Inspector General took place on April 19, 1836, at the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
Abroad
Gogol went abroad in June 1836 and lived there for a long time, about twelve years,occasionally coming to Russia on business, especially in connection with the publication of the first volume of "Dead Souls".
In Paris, Gogol learned of Pushkin's death.To his Nezhin friend,with whom he lived in Paris,Gogol said:: "You know how much I love my mother,but if I lost even her,I couldn't be as sad as I am now:Pushkin doesn't exist in this world anymore."
From Paris, Gogol leaves for Rome,choosing it as a place of permanent residence.But even away from the motherland, the writer does not stop living with thoughts about its fate.He writes "Dead Souls", reworks some of his early works.
On his second visit to Russia (in 1841), Gogol submitted the finished manuscript of the first volume of Dead Souls to the censor.
The censors did not immediately pass the manuscript.Gogol had to make a number of concessions.
Finally, the manuscript was approved for publication,and in May 1842, the first volume of Dead Souls was published.
But already at the end of work on the first volume, Gogol decided to continue "Dead Souls" and give two more volumes.He created them with already changed views.There were a number of reasons for this:lack of connections with the progressive public,the influence of people around him,religious and conservative.
In the spring of 1848, he returned to Russia.
