Cuscuta chinensis Lam. (Convolvulaceae) is a parasitic plant. Its seed is commonly used as a tonic for liver and kidney in herbal medicines. C. chinensis has pharmacological activities, such as anticancer (Nisa et al., 1986; Umehara et al., 2004), antiaging (Liu et al., 2003), and immune-stimulatory properties and is used to improve sexual function, prevent senescence, and regulate the immune system (Bao et al., 2002; Zheng et al., 1998). Flavonoids and lignans are the major chemical constituents. Poor aqueous solubility of flavonoids and lignans, their absorption upon oral administration could be the limited factor for pharmaceutical applications. Nano-precipitation method (Yen et al., 2008) was used for preparation of nano-coated extract of C. chinensis. The nano-coated C. chinenesis extract was water soluble and in comparison to ethanolic extract, the former exhibited higher hepato- protective and antioxidant effects at lower dose concentration.

Morning Glory Symbionts

Some species of morning glories (Convolvulaceae) have been shown to contain systemic fungi in the genus Periglandula (Clavicipitaceae) in leaves, stems, and seeds (Steiner et al., 2011). These epibionts have been found to produce high levels of ergot and other toxic alkaloids that are believed to be antiherbivory compounds. These fungi like class I endophytes, appear to be closely coevolved and obligate associates of their host plants. Before discovery of the morning glory symbionts it was generally believed that morning glories were the source of the toxic ergot alkaloids contained within their tissues. However, it is now clear that fungal symbionts are the source of the alkaloids that toxify morning glories.
