Irish poetry is poetry written by

Irish poetry is poetry written by

poets from Ireland. It is mainly

written in Irish and English,

though some is in Scottish Gaelic

and some in Hiberno-Latin.

The complex interplay between the two main traditions, and between both of them and other poetries in English and Scottish Gaelic, has produced a body of work that is both rich in variety and difficult to categorise.

Jonathan Swift

Jonathan Swift

In Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)was an Anglo-Irish poet satirist, essayist.Irish literature in English found its first writer of real genius. Although best known for prose works like Gulliver’s Travels and A Tale of a Tub, Swift was a poet of considerable talent. Technically close to his English contemporaries Pope and Dryden, Swift's poetry evinces the same tone savage satire and horror of the human body and its functions that characterises much of his prose. Interestingly, Swift also published translations of poems from the Irish.

Jonatan Swift’s poem A Description of the Morning

Now hardly here and there a hackney-coach

Appearing, show'd the ruddy morn's approach.

Now Betty from her master's bed had flown,

And softly stole to discompose her own.

The slip-shod 'prentice from his master's door

Had par'd the dirt, and sprinkled round the floor.

‘A Description of the Morning’ was first published in a literary and newspaper called The Tatler. This publication was run by one of Swift’s close friends, Sir Richard Steele. The poem was published on April 30, 1709.
