Introduction

An extensive bibliography is devoted to Stern's work, however, in general, modern stern studies pays more attention to Stern's first work "Tristram Shandy". A serious study of Stern's work began only in the twentieth century. A detailed interpretation of the "Sentimental Journey" was devoted to the monograph of the Australian scientist R. Brissenden "Suffering Virtue. A sentimental novel from Richardson to Garden, "in which the author, in a polemic with A. Cash, defends the priority of feeling in this novel, rejecting A. Cash's concept of" Stern-rationalist of the 18th century. " Along with the study of the origins of Stern's novel, English criticism was occupied with the problem of Stern's contribution in the light of aesthetic and ethical-philosophical searches. One of these popular topics is the analysis of an unconventional solution to the problem of novel time. One of the most important problems of stern studies is also the problem of correlation between the positions of the author and the narrator. It is in the light of this problem that more and more critical readings of The Sentimental Journey are emerging. Some critics prefer to combine Stern the human, Stern the writer and the conventional narrator Yorick. Others, on the contrary, argue that the author himself does not share the sensual and pathetic position of his hero-storyteller, reproaching Stern for insincerity, a desire to write for the needs of a sentimentally inclined public. E. Dilworth in his monograph "Laurence Stern's Unsentimental Journey" dispelled the myth of the "sensitive Stern". A. Cash in the monograph "The Comedy of Moral Feelings in the Work of Stern" in polemics with these conclusions puts forward his interpretation of "Sentimental Journey" on the basis of comparisons of Yorick's statements with the text of Stern's sermons, concluding that Stern opposes Yorick's spontaneous sensitivity with the stable virtue of such characters as a monk, an old French officer, a donkey owner, which is difficult to agree with, since Yorick is no less virtuous.

Laurence Sterne (24 November 1713 – 18 March 1768) was an Anglo-1Irish novelist and an Anglican cleric. He wrote the novels The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, and also published many sermons, wrote memoirs, and was involved in local politics. Sterne died in London after years of fighting tuberculosis.

Sterne grew up in a military family and spent his early youth travelling from place to place, mainly in Ireland but also (on brief occasions) in England. Sterne's wealthy uncle provided the funds for Sterne to attend Hipperholme Grammar School in the West Riding of Yorkshire as Sterne's father was ordered to Jamaica where he would die of malaria a few years later. Sterne attended Jesus College, Cambridge on a sizarship where he earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. While he was serving a vicarship at Sutton-on-the-Forest in Yorkshire, he married Elizabeth Lumley in 1741.

Sterne's A Political Romance, an ecclesiastical satire, received harsh criticism by the church and was burnt. Having discovered a talent for writing, Sterne published the first few volumes of his best-known novel, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Sterne struggled with tuberculosis and travelled to France to find relief from his illness. His travels in France were documented in A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, which was published a few weeks before his death. Published posthumously was Journal to Eliza, a collection of his letters to Eliza Draper, a woman for whom Sterne had romantic feelings.

Sterne died in 1768 and was buried in the churchyard of St George's, Hanover Square. It has been alleged that Sterne's body was stolen after burial and sold to anatomists at Cambridge University. After being recognised, he was reinterred. His alleged skull was found after the churchyard was redeveloped and was transferred to Coxwold churchyard in 1969 by the Laurence Sterne Trust.
