The aim of the lesson

To give students information about

  • how to teach speaking interactively,

  • how to organize discussion activities

  • What factors can affect speaking development

Objectives:

  1. to introduce students with different types of discussion;

  2. to study principles of conducting discussion activities.

  3. to inform about peculiarities of designing discussion activities

Outcomes:
Students by the end of the lesson should:

  1. be able to distinguish types of discussion

  2. be aware principles of conducting discussion activities

  3. be able to design discussion activities.

Teaching methods

brainstorming, discussion, question-answer work, sample study, different tasks

Means of teaching

Blackboard (or flipchart with crayons), projector (slides), handouts

1.1. Teacher greets with Students and starts the lesson with warm-up activity. Teacher divides the class into some groups and asks:
Do you like reading books?
What kind of books do you prefer?
Students talk about them in their groups and decide which the most interesting lie in their group.



To motivate students for the lesson and develop listening, speaking skills

2.1. Teacher distributes Handout 1 asks Students in pairs to look and tell what they know about the books.
After short discussion, teacher gives second handouts and puts music.
Reflection: Teacher asks students to analyse what they have already done:

  • What kind of activity was it?

  • Can it be considered as interactive speaking process?

2.2 Teacher presents power point presentation and discuss with Students. In groups, Students complete the task that teacher distribute
Reflection: teacher presents theoretical part of the lesson and consolidate students’ comprehension.

2.3 Teacher puts Students in 4 groups. Each group receives and answers IELTS part 2 questions.
Reflection: Teacher asks students to analyse what they have already done.
