Kristel Sharpe (2014) explored the positive and bad arguments of connecting with friends online 

rather than face-to-face communication in her paper “Are online “friends” a threat to development?” 
with explanations, reasons and suggestions. To begin with, one of the most significant issues that has 
arisen as a result of advancing technology is the increase in online friends and the disappearance of 
offline acquaintances. Second, they use online friends to support offline ties rather than exchanging 
offline friends with online friends. Finally, our virtual connection provides social benefits while also 
improving our mental health. Allen et al. (2010) discovered that socially adjusted adolescents are more 
likely than those who are not to have a social networking profile.
Friends in real life are preferable to online friends since they may meet up and engage in person, 
allowing you to learn more about the individual’s personality. Because we can’t see the person’s body 
language or tone when communicating with online buddies, we just see lines of text in instant 
messaging. The researchers feel that in order to build truly intimate friendships, face-to-face 
communication is almost always required. Face-to-face friendships have vanished as a result of 
technological advancements, while online friendships have grown in popularity. Social media platforms 
like Facebook, Instagram and Telegram have a negative impact on face-to-face communication with our 
friends. Furthermore, if Facebook were to become a country, it would be the third most populous in
the world.
