Uzbekistan – Tajikistan. In Tajikistan, a fratricidal war broke out in 1992-1997, which negatively affected the country's economic development, as well as cooperation with neighboring countries, in particular with Uzbekistan.

In 1997, an agreement was signed in Moscow between the official authorities of Tajikistan and the opposition forces on national reconciliation, after which Tajikistan's ties with neighboring countries were restored. At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan I. A. Karimov, President of Tajikistan Imomali Rahmon paid a working visit to Uzbekistan in January 1998. Following the visit, the leaders of the two States signed a joint communique and an agreement between the two governments on cargo transportation and gas supplies, and on mutual settlements of Tajikistan's debts. Uzbekistan uses transport communications that run through the territory of Tajikistan. The trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan is growing from year to year. 2017 opened a new page in relations between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In may Sh.M.Mirziyoev met with the President of Tajikistan E. Rahmon in the framework of participation held in Saudi Arabia capital Ar-Riyadh summit of US and Arab-Muslim countries. A number of mutually beneficial agreements were reached during the meeting. In April 2017, after a 25-year break, air traffic between Dushanbe and Tashkent was restored.
