INTRODUCTION
There is no reluctance that William Shakespeare had a huge impact on not only in theater and movies and other bards and novelists, but also in the English language, with words that we ply every day. Many people may not even know that it was him who developed or coined these words. Faithfully, there are a great deal of words that Shakespeare contrived that we still utilized today. Who do you think developed the words manager, fashionable, eyeball, laughable, gloomy or lonely, among others?
William Shakespeare has consciousness of seven languages and usually made direct quotes in other languages precisely in the plays that he wrote. It is remarkable that he had a vocabulary of 24,000 words, one of the most for any writer, then and now.
Shakespeare's writings considerably effected the whole English language. Before and in the midst of Shakespeare's time, the grammar and rules of English were not standardized. However, when Shakespeare's plays became famous in the late seventeenth and eighteenth century, they assisted contribute to the standardization of the English language, with many Shakespearean words and phrases becoming submerged in the English language, peculiarly through works such as Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of English Language which quoted Shakespeare more than any other author did. He enlarged the scope of English literature by instigating new words and phrases, investigating with blank verse and also instigating new poetic and grammatical structures.
Among Shakespeare's biggest benefactions to the English language must be the introduction of new vocabulary and phrases which have enhanced the language making it more
colourful and intriguing. Some estimates at the number of words coined by Shakespeare number in the several thousands. Warren King states by saying that, "In all of his work – the plays, the sonnets and the narrative poems – Shakespeare uses 17,677 words: Of those, 1,700 were first used by Shakespeare."¹ He is also famous for borrowing from the classical literature and foreign languages. He created these words by altering nouns into verbs, altering verbs into adjectives, connecting words that never utilized together before, adding prefixes and suffixes, and developing words wholly original. Many of Shakespeare's original phrases are still used in communication and language for the time being. These contain, but are not limited to; "seen better days, strange bedfellows, a sorry sight," and "full circle".
Shakespeare added a great number of words to the English language when contrasted to subtractions to English vocabulary made in other times. Shakespeare assisted to further advance style and structure to an otherwise loose, unique and spontaneous language. Written Elizabethan English stylistically closely followed the spoken language. The spontaneity gave force and liberty since there was no formalized prescriptive grammar tieing the expression. While surplus of prescribed grammatical rules brought in vagueness in literature, it also indicated feelings with intense radiance and emotion which produced, "liberty of expression" and "radiance of presentment". It was a language which made feelings precisely. Shakespeare's gift contained using the ebullience of the language and decasyllabic formation in prose and poetry of his works to outstretch the masses and the outcome was "a continual two way interchange between learned and the famous, together inventing the unique combination of indelicate tang and the exalted stateliness that apprises the language of Shakespeare".
While it is obvious that Shakespeare invented many new words (the Oxford English Dictionary records over 2,000), an article in National Geographic points out the findings of historian Jonathan Hope who wrote in "Shakespeare's 'Native English'" that "the Victorian scholars who read texts for the first edition of the OED paid special attention to Shakespeare: his texts were read more thoroughly and cited more often, so he is often credited with the first use of words, or senses of words, which can, in fact, be found in other writers."²
