The discovery
Eventually, Nathanael decides to propose to Olimpia. He walks over to the 
professor's house. As he enters, he hears the loud voices of quarreling. 
Entering the room, he is horrified to see what is going on: Spalanzani and 
Coppola are fighting over Olimpia - but Olimpia is nothing more than a 
mechanical puppet that the two constructed together.
“He trembled with inner delight (...); for it seemed to him that Olimpia was over
his works, about his poetic gift in general, spoke quite deeply from within 
himself, yes, as if the voice had sounded out from within himself. That had 
to be the case; for more words than aforesaid spoke Olympia
never.” (p. 53)
Coppola finally emerges victorious from the dispute; he snatches the doll 
from Spalanzani and flees. Nathanael sees that Olimpia has no more eyes; 
they are lying on the floor. Spalanzani suffered profusely bleeding 
lacerations in the fight with Coppola. The eyes on the floor are also 
smeared with blood. Packs in his excitement over the lost doll

Spalanzani these eyes and hurls them against Nathanael's chest. Nathanael, 
remembering his somber poem, loses his nerve and lunges at the professor 
to strangle him. In the meantime, however, neighbors have become aware 
of the tumult and have come into the house. They separate the combatants 
and have Nathanael taken to a madhouse.

Now Nathanael saw a pair of bloody eyes lying on the ground staring at him, 
which Spalanzani grabbed with his uninjured hand and threw down
him that they hit his chest. - Then madness seized him with red-hot
claws (...)” (p
Spalanzani's fraud has now been discovered. Nobody has noticed that Olimpia 
is a doll before, although he has even taken her to tea parties. But now 
everyone claims to have had their suspicions for a long time. Spalanzani is 
expelled from the university, Coppola has disappeared.
