CONCLUSION
"The Sandman" is a story in the tradition of the Black Romantic art 
fairy tale (often also referred to as a gothic novel) by ETA Hoffmann, which 
was first published in 1816. It was published in Berlin, 
Realschulbuchhandlung, without a specific author, as the first story in the 
cycle "Nachtstücke. Edited by the author of the fantasy pieces in Callot's 
manner." Also included there: "The Jesuit Church in G.", "Ignaz Denner", 
"The Sanctus". In 1817 a second part of the night pieces followed with the 
stories "Das öde Haus", "Das Majorat", "Das Vow" and "Das steinerne 
Herz". "The Sandman" offers many interpretations and is one of the 
author's most important works,
After the three introductory letters, the narrator speaks directly to the 
reader: He tells him that Lothar is a friend of his and that is how he found 
out about Nathanael's fate. He gives various ways he could have started 
the story, but concludes that the letters are best suited to bring the 
reader closer to the tragedy of Nathanael. He also reports on Nathanael's 
life situation and describes Clara, towards whom he takes a very positive 
position.
