The peddler and the professor's daughter
A few years later, Nathanael, now engaged to Clara, moves to another city 
to study. One day an Italian peddler comes to his apartment and wants to 
offer him weather glasses (= barometers). Nathanael immediately throws 
the uninvited guest out, because this peddler brings back bad memories 
in him: he looks like Coppelius! Nathanael is convinced that he has met his 
father's murderer again - especially when he learns the stranger's name: 
Coppola. The young man is very upset by the encounter and sees it as a 
harbinger of impending disaster. But eventually Nathanael learns from 
his physics professor Spalanzani that Coppola comes from Italy and has 
known him for a long time. That calms Nathanael a little. One day when 
he comes to Spalanzani's house for a lesson, through a glass door he sees 
a strikingly beautiful young woman sitting motionless at the table. As he 
learns, it is Spalanzani's daughter Olimpia, whom her father has kept 
hidden from the public at home.

Shortly thereafter, Nathanael returns home. He is obsessed with the idea 
that with Coppelius or Coppola an evil force has entered his life that will 
destroy his relationship with Clara and his life. He torments his family, 
especially Clara, with his mystical theories. This one sees things far more 
soberly. She tries to convince Nathanael that Coppelius only has power over 
him as long as he himself believes in it. Nathanael feels misunderstood by 
her and is upset. Finally, he processes his train of thought in a poem in which 
he connects his childhood fears with his relationship with Clara and her 
future: He is standing in front of the altar with Clara when Coppelius 
suddenly appears and touches Clara's eyes, which then jump against 
Nathanael's chest. Then Coppelius throws Nathanael into the fire. He hears 
Clara's voice saying that she still has her eyes, and eventually the fire dies 
out. But when Nathanael looks at his bride, he looks death itself in the face.

But then Coppola stepped fully into the room and spoke in a hoarse tone (...): 'Oh, no 
weather glass, no weather glass! - also have sköne Oke - sköne Oke!' - cried out in horror
Nathanael: 'Great human, how can you have eyes? - eyes - eyes? -'"
Nathanael recites this poem to Clara. She reacts in horror and asks him to 
destroy it. He is furious and accuses Clara of being as callous as an automaton. 
When Lothar finds out about Nathanael's behavior towards his sister, a heated 
argument ensues between the two. Eventually, they even want to duel, which 
Clara is able to prevent at the last minute. The three are reconciled, and a few 
days later Nathanael travels back to his place of study.
“Now Nathanael first beheld Olimpia's beautifully formed face. only the
His eyes seemed strangely rigid and dead. But as he looked more and 
more sharply through the glass, it was as if tears went into Olympia's eyes
moonbeams up.” (p. 42)
To his horror, the house he used to live in has now burned down: a fire 
broke out in the pharmacy's laboratory on the ground floor. However, 
friends managed to save Nathanael's belongings.

Now he moves into a new apartment, directly opposite the house where 
Professor Spalanzani lives. Sometimes, looking out of the window, Nathanael 
sees Olimpia sitting still and motionless in her room, just as when she first 
met her.
