Present (adj.)/present (n.)
Definition(s):
1. (adjective) now existing or in progress
2. (noun) the present time (now)


Example(s):
1. At the present time, our company cannot answer that question.
2. I try to live in the present, and not to worry too much about the future or about the past.


To precede (v.)
Definition(s): to be earlier than, to come before.
Example(s): My obsession with ceramics preceded my ability to actually make pottery — initially, I just liked to look at the pretty pots!


Shabby (adj.)
Definition(s): threadbare and faded from wear


Example(s): I forgot my new gym shoes at my friend’s house after buying them, so I had to wear my older sister’s shabbier ones.


To splinter (v.)
Definition(s): to split into long thin pieces (usually refers to wood)


Example(s): The angry student threw his pencil onto the floor, and it splintered into several pieces.


To stain (v.)/stained (adj.)
Definition(s):
1. (adjective) dirty with color
2. (verb) to discolor, to make dirty with color


Example(s):
1. (adjective) I wasn’t careful when I was eating my plov and I accidentally dropped some oil on my shirt, and now my shirt is stained!
2. (verb) I stained my shirt this morning when I spilled sauce for my somsa on my it.


Ritual (n.)
Definition(s): the established form for a ceremony


Example(s): My friends and I have a ritual that we perform before exams. We go to breakfast, ask each other a set of questions, and jump up and down three times.
