To discard (v.)
Definition(s): to get rid of especially as useless or unwanted


Example(s): The student discarded all of her unfinished drafts after handing the final assignment in to her teacher.


Slip (n.)
Definition(s): a small piece of paper


Example(s): When we were playing charades, the teacher asked us to pick slips of paper that had words written on them.


To substitute (v.)
Definition(s): to put or use something in the place of another


Example(s): I didn’t have vegetable oil to cook with, so I substituted sunflower oil.


Tiny (adj.)
Definition(s): very small


Example(s): Everyone always thinks I’m younger where I am, because I’m so tiny.


Safe (n.)
Definition(s): a place or receptacle to keep articles (such as valuables) safe


Example(s): We stored all our money in the hotel safe when we were on vacation.


To fuss (v.)
Definition(s): to become upset; to create or be in a state of restless activity


Example(s): The baby fussed a bit, and that’s how we knew she was hungry.


Recital (n.)
Definition(s): a concert given by an individual musician or dancer or by a dance troupe


Example(s): The little girl didn’t want to perform in her ballet recital, so she sat on her father’s lap during the performance.


Perfunctory (adj.)
Definition(s): lacking in interest or enthusiasm


Example(s): All of the bored student’s answers to the teacher’s question were short and perfunctory.


Chant (n.)
Definition(s): a recital in a monotonous repetitive tone


Example(s): The singers were too tired to actually sing, so they just said the words to the song in a chant.
